Wildscapes run regular training events throughout the year with courses for a wide range of ecological and land management disciplines aimed at varying experience levels. Introduction to Phase 1 Habitat Surveys

Thursday 25th April 2019
9:30 - 16:00

Join ecologist Julie Riley for a day’s training on Phase 1 Habitat Survey techniques – an essential skill for quickly surveying and mapping habitat types.

The course runs 09:30 – 16:00 and covers understanding how to plan, conduct and write up a Phase 1 survey. There will be a classroom-based introduction in the morning, followed by the opportunity to try out techniques in the field in a local park.

 

The course costs £72.50 per person, with discounts for SRWT members, students, SRWT staff and SRWT volunteers.

Bat Surveys: An Introduction to Bats, Buildings and Activity Surveys

Monday 29th April 2019
12:00 - 21:30

This one day course is aimed at people entering or working in the ecology sector who want to get an introduction to bat surveying before the start of the survey season. The course covers:
 

– An introduction to the biology and ecology of bats

– An introduction to the identification of British bats

– An introduction to bat legislation

– How to plan and conduct a Preliminary Roost Assessment on buildings, identifying potential for bat roosts

– An introduction to nocturnal activity surveys

– Bat walk in a local park, practicing using bat detectors

The course is scheduled to finish at 21:30 but this is an estimated finish time. The evening bat walk is optional and is dependent on the weather; in the event of bad weather, an indoor demonstration of bat detectors with acoustic lures will be used instead.

– How to plan and conduct ground based tree assessments, identifying potential for bat roosts

– An introduction to aerial survey techniques with a demonstration of tree climbing and use of endoscopes

– An introduction to nocturnal activity surveys

– Bat walk in a local park, practicing using bat detectors

Venue

Most classroom courses are based at the Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust Office (Victoria Hall, 37 Stafford Rd, Sheffield, South Yorkshire S2 2SF).

All site based courses are located within an hour’s drive of Sheffield city centre and will be confirmed nearer the time.
